My blood sugar was 158 this morning. Woo! No hoo yet, but getting there. I think eliminating quinoa & millet, as well as all other grains, is working for me. I expect it will take about 3 days for my morning blood sugars to recover.
I went for my yearly eye exam today. The doctor told me I have amazing eyes for a 56 year old. That deserves a woo-hoo! It's nice to have some things work well, even if my pancreas doesn't. lol
Back in 1995 I had Lasik eye surgery at a TLC center in Tulsa. I highly recommend these centers as that is all they do and they are very well trained. You can go to http://www.tlcvision.com/ to find the TLC center nearest to you.
When I had Lasik done my eyes were very, very nearsighted with astigmatism. I know, I know, you are saying, so what, I (or someone I know) is very nearsighted too. Well, I bet you anything mine was worse (big smile). I asked the eye doctor to estimate and he said I was about 20/6,000 in one eye and 20/10,000 in the other. Without glasses, if you put your face inches from my face it would still be blurry. I had to put on glasses to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My glasses were so thick, they were like coke bottle bottoms.
I had a co-worker once claim hers was worse because her eye doctor said only his 70 year old patients had worse vision than her. I asked my eye doctor if only their elderly patients had worse vision than me, and she said, "Oh no, they see much better than you. We have one patient that we can't correct to 20/20 who is worse off than you, but that's it."
The TLC center I went to did a fantastic job and gave me 20/20 vision. Sometimes, after 16 years I take it for granted. But it is so nice to not have to wear glasses or contacts and to be able to see ALL THE TIME!
Today, my vision is still 20/20. I remember I was juicing (carrots, celery, etc.) back when I had the surgery done and at my eye exam afterwards he said I was one of the few that did not have scar tissue. I had reabsorbed it. But, even though my eye doctor thought it was great that Lasik has held this long, that wasn't what he was complimenting me on.
He asked me what kind of reading glasses I used and I said I didn't use any. He said it was amazing for a 56 year old to still have flexible lenses like I have. He said many people start losing that flexibility and wearing reading glasses at 42 years old. I asked what can be attributed to that and he said they don't know.
Well, here is my guess:
- Nutrition - whole foods, plenty of vegetables and fruits (for me nowadays it is only those fruits that people think of as veggies because of the blood sugar effect of the others), and antioxidants from foods and supplements. No transfats but include some omega-3 fats (either in supplements or in omega-3 enhanced eggs or grass-fed meat) and also some saturated fats.
- Eye exercises - when I walk I focus on trees far away and then the ground up close, then an in-between spot, etc.
- Genetics - I'm sure they play a part but I will have to check with my mom and see when she started getting far-sighted or needed reading glasses. But since her and all my siblings still wear glasses and contacts for nearsightedness, it might be hard to compare.
Whatever the reason, I am grateful for my amazing eyes!
