I am so proud of myself. I have avoided the donuts and chocolates at work and all starchy carbs. But I am most proud that I avoided all the junk, including cake, at a baby shower on Thursday night. I ate a few almonds and veggies and that was it. Someone asked me if I had had any cake and was very impressed when I said I didn't. So I told her I was diabetic and 'I could eat it but sometimes it's just not worth the insulin.'
I think sugar has a short-term effect on my need for insulin, because I have eaten sugar before to bring my sugar levels back up after a crash and it helped but didn't seem to bother me long-term. But starchy carbs, white flour in particular, seem to affect my insulin needs for about 3 days or more. That's why a piece of cake is not worth it. I know that allergies can cause symptoms 3 days later so that makes sense.
I also went to a Chinese buffet with co-workers and only ate meat and veggies, and they had some cool looking desserts. Woo-hoo!
The next morning after the baby shower I had an awesome blood sugar of 73 and I was not crashing. Thus confirming that avoiding the cake was well worth it because I felt so good. I have been able to reduce my 24 hour insulin to 10 units again. My weight seems to have stabilized around 125. Here are some blood sugars:
- 12:30pm today - 101
- 11:30pm yesterday - 149
- 9:00pm - 96
- 12:15pm - 102
- 7:45am - 73
- day before yesterday - some 200s and a couple in the 100s - I almost raised my 24 hour insulin by a unit but I'm glad I didn't. I just had to wait for starchy carbs I had days before to leave my system.
